Hello rebels,

Since our last newsletter, which was only a little over a week ago, XRSA has successfully carried out two non-violent civil disobedience actions. A bicycle swarm and a die-in on the street outside the Adelaide morgue. Both actions ran so smoothly, we are really starting to see the benefits of the methodical and meticulous training and culture building that we have been doing since the formation of XRSA late last year. With new members flooding in from all across the state, our capacity to disrupt business as usual is only going to swell over the coming months, and we invite you to come along and ride the wave.

Recently Extinction Rebellion announced the next International Rebellion will start on October 7th. We encourage you to not only put the date in your calendar, but to book time off work. It’s going to be an activism extravaganza. Locally we are building capacity for this date through our trainings and upcoming actions. Now is the time to get involved, trained and ready to rebel.

Actions Last Month

Funeral for the Human Race

On the 22nd of July, XR rebel Cristel joined with dozens of other rebels for XR SA’s most dramatic non-violent civil disobedience action yet. Cristel penned some poignant words about the experience.

On Monday I was dead.

I laid across the road in front of the Adelaide morgue as a corpse who had died as a result of climate change. I had contracted dengue fever as Australia became extremely humid at a rapid pace and we weren’t prepared for the swathe of tropical diseases that exploded upon us. I was surrounded by others who’d died of other climate related causes as well as mourners who watched over the fallen and sang for a better future.

While this was a small piece of street theatre, there will inevitably be masses of deaths like this in lesser developed places around the world first unless we use all of our efforts to halt climate change, which starts with stopping fossil fuels.

We can do this and we must.

The rest of the world is relying on us to act.

Bicycle Swarm Action

On a bright, sunny Adelaide winter’s day, 30 keen cyclists joined us for our inaugural Critical Mass – Extinction Bicycle Swarm. With some ‘old hands’ alongside first timers we laid an excellent foundation. Participants aged from three (sitting in a cargo bike) to elder-hood. Our youngest cyclist was six years old, who completed with energy to spare. These will continue to be non-arrestable disruptive actions with the swarm slowing and stopping vehicle traffic, to raise awareness of the impact of fossil-fuelled societies. Drivers took this in good spirits, with only an occasional grumpy motorist.

So dust off your (or a mates) bike. Let’s double the numbers 31st August!

Heading for Extinction Presentation

24 people braved the cold to hear our Heading for Extinction Presentation XR presentation at the Coromandel Community Centre. A follow up get together is planned within the next month at which a local XR group could be formed.

Join the Rebellion

We have a lot coming up in the next few weeks, and we’d love you to get involved.

For new members we recommend you:

Participate in Actions

We encourage you to come out and get involved in our actions. Many actions run by Extinction Rebellion will involve nonviolent direct action (NVDA). To be prepared for them, we need activists to complete Conscientious Protector training. After completing this training you can join or form an affinity group.

Affinity Groups are small groups who organise and take direct action together. As we are grow, they will be the most effective way for us to disrupt and draw attention to our demands.

Affinity groups have a long history. They’ve proven to be effective at enhancing activist support, sustainability and safety. At their core, they’re small groups of people who trust each other. and have similar views on their preferred types and levels of actions.

In XRSA, the Actions and Arts Working group are working out an overarching strategy. Each Affinity group has relative autonomy to work on their actions in support of the strategy while maintaining the values of XR.

Extinction Rebellion conducts training for new and aspiring activists concerned about the lack of action on the ecological emergency, widespread extinctions, and rising global temperatures. Based on the principles of non-violent direct action (NVDA), this training will give you the skills to engage in civil resistance, a peaceful and disruptive form of direct action.

If you have been watching rebels blockading bridges in London, stopping traffic in Melbourne, occupying parliament in Adelaide, blockading the Adani site–and you are considering participation in actions like these–here is a starting point.
